ABOUT US
The non-profit association August Macke Haus e. V. was founded in 1989 by committed citizens with the aim of making the artist's house accessible as a memorial and research site and preserving it for the long term. The association is exclusively involved in promotional activities and supports the work of the museum.
OUR GOALS
• Preserving the memory and work of August Macke and the Rhenish Expressionists and communicating their work to a broad audience.
• Providing conceptual and financial support to the Museum August Macke Haus.
• Promoting art education programmes at the Museum August Macke Haus.
• Promoting art, culture, science and research by making the collection, archive and library at the Museum August Macke Haus accessible to the public.

The house in which August Macke lived from 1911 to 1914, and which houses his studio in the attic, was saved from demolition and conversion into a restaurant in 1988 thanks to the initiative of the Bonn Art Association, chaired by Dr Margarethe Jochimsen.
The city of Bonn was able to acquire it in June 1989 with the help of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a sponsor. Since the city was unable to take on the task of maintaining the house as a memorial site at that time, it encouraged a number of committed citizens to found an association to ensure that the house could be used as a memorial and research site.
With the help of retired savings bank director Bernd Thewalt, then savings bank director Michael Kranz, the chairwoman of the Bonn Art Association and a number of members, the non-profit association August Macke Haus e. V. was founded on 26 September 1989 in the artist's studio, which had fallen into disrepair.
With the transfer of museum operations to Museum August Macke Haus gGmbH at the beginning of 2019, whose shareholders are the association (51%) and the August Macke Haus Foundation of the Bonn Savings Bank (49%), the August Macke Haus association now acts exclusively in a supporting capacity.
