SPECIAL EXHIBITION

4 September 2025 – 15 March 2026
August Macke & Friends – Perspectives on Our Collection

Beginning in Autumn 2025 the Museum August Macke House will highlight its own collection, comprising more than 4,000 works by 70 artists. Alongside August Macke the focus will be placed on artists close to him from the group of (Rhineland) Expressionists and representatives of the art scene in the Rhineland.

August Macke is regarded not only as one of the pathbreaking Expressionist artists, but also as an important networker who brought together at both the national and international levels numerous artist colleagues, gallerists, and collectors and sought to establish the Rhineland as an important hub of Expressionism. The central place of his efforts was his home in Bonn, both residence and studio, and now the site of our Museum. It was here that he received renowned figures from the international art scene like Robert Delaunay, Gabriele Münter, and Max Ernst; that he experienced his artistically most productive period; and that he observed both the city and its people, which he chose as constant themes in his works.

The exhibition August Macke & Friends – Perspectives on Our Collection shows a selection of some 60 works from the Museum's holdings, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and handicrafts by artists such as Max Beckmann, Fifi Kreutzer, Gabriele Münter, Paul Adolf Seehaus, Hans Thuar, and Marta Worringer. The works will be accompanied by a recounting of personal moments experienced by individuals in Bonn, figures in the public eye, men and women from cultural circles and society, and people from the Museum's neighborhood.

We hope thereby to reveal new and quite different perspectives on the August Macke House Museum's collection. Visitors will also be asked to offer their own feelings as part of the exhibition.
