From autumn 2026, the Frankfurt am Main-based artist Chunqing Huang (born 1974 in Heze, China) will offer a contemporary perspective on August Macke and Expressionism. Huang is known for her expressive, distinctive style and her free use of colour and form. She prefers to work in series, in which she approaches different themes using a specific visual language in each case. In *Painter’s Portrait*, for example, she explores a hundred iconic moments of modernism, distilling them from her memory and transforming them into her own artistic form. In the photographic series *City Life*, she captures – much like August Macke did in his day – the hustle and bustle of city life in seemingly chance glimpses of people on the street.

The exhibition brings together around 70 works, including paintings and photographs. The focus is on selected series from the last ten years, such as *Painter’s Portrait* (2016–2023), *City Life* (2016), *Rideau Avignon* (2023) and *En Vogue* (since 2024), as well as more recent works created especially for the exhibition.

Chunqing Huang studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing from 1994 to 1998 and, from 2000, at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under Peter Angermann and Wolfgang Tillmans. In 2004, she became a master student of Hermann Nitsch, specialising in free painting and interdisciplinary art. Her works are held in numerous national and international collections and have been exhibited at institutions such as the Kunsthalle Mannheim, the Museum Wiesbaden and, most recently, the Kirchnerhaus Museum in Aschaffenburg.

To accompany the exhibition, a limited edition and a bilingual catalogue (DE/EN) are being published, featuring essays by Florian Ebner, Susanne Kleine and Friederike Voßkamp.
