Verein August Macke Haus

The house where August Macke lived from 1911 to 1914, and whose top floor was the site of his first and only studio, was rescued from gutting and conversion into a pub in 1988. The campaign to save the house was waged by the Bonner Kunstverein and its director Dr. Margarethe Jochimsen. With the support of the state government of North-Rhine/Westphalia and another sponsor, the city of Bonn purchased the property in 1989. Since the city at that time was unable to ensure appropriate management of the house as a monument to the artist, it convinced some civic-minded individuals to set up an association guaranteeing the use of the house as a memorial and research center. With the particular help of retired Sparkasse Director Bernd Thewalt, his successor Michael Kranz, the Director of the Bonner Kunstverein, and a dozen additional members, the Verein August Macke Haus e.V. (registered August Macke Association) was founded on September 26, 1989 in the dilapidated rooms that had formerly served as the artist's studio. The Association's purpose is to support the August Macke Haus by operating the artist's former studio as a biographical museum, assembling a collection of works by Rhenish Expressionists, and researching Rhenish Expressionism. The organization's most important activities are the preparation and staging of exhibitions and publication of research.

The Association is a certified not-for-profit organization open to membership by individuals and institutions. Members are expected to provide an annual contribution of 100 euros (1,000 euros for firms).

Admirers of the art of August Macke who wish to join the Association will be sent a membership form upon request.
